Hello, my name is Steve and I run a small, independent country practice offering a professional and strictly confidential service of pre-arranged sessions for individuals and couples.
The overall aim is to provide clients with an opportunity to work towards leading more satisfying and resourceful lives. Every effort has been made to create an environment in which the counsellor and the client can work in an enabling and empowering way.
Self-referrals welcome from private individuals, in addition to GPs and other health professionals.
My Qualifications and Experience
In addition to running my own practice I have also worked as part of a highly professional and dedicated team in further education for five years, providing a high quality Confidential Counselling Service to students of all ages with a wide diversity of issues.
I am qualified to Higher Professional Diploma level and I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and a UKRCP Registered Independent Counsellor/Psychotherapist.
I am committed to my ongoing personal and professional development, and often attend lectures and workshops. I have excellent Clinical Supervision and regularly accept referrals from GPs and other Health Professionals.
"As an Accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and Subject to the Professional Conduct Procedure therein"
In addition I am a Member of the Association of Independent Practitioners.
To lead a better life...
What is counselling?
Counselling may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific issues, making decisions, improving relationships with others, coping with crisis, developing personal insight and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict, or developmental issues. It is not telling people what to do, nor is it primarily advice and information, although these aspects may feature in some counselling relationships. The purpose of counselling is to facilitate positive change by giving clients an opportunity to explore and understand their difficulties and the reactions and feelings surrounding them.
How can counselling help?
• Most problems assume a less frightening dimension once they are aired, enabling you to move more freely.
• By supporting you to start looking at old difficulties in a new way.
• A clearer view of things may give you increased self-confidence and enable you to free yourself of unwanted thoughts and feelings like worry, anxiety and depression.
• Difficulties may crop up in our lives for a wide variety of reasons and it is at these times talking to a counsellor could be most useful. You can talk about anything that is affecting you.
Sometimes it is not in our own best interest to talk about our difficulties with family members, friends or colleagues. Counselling enables your issues to be explored in a non-directive, non-judgmental and empathic (understanding) way.
Confidentiality and Privacy
Confidentiality means that what you discuss during your counselling sessions will be kept private. You will be informed of the limits of confidentiality and these rules will be maintained indefinitely. Coded session notes will be securely kept for seven years, in line with medical practice.
Some clients may prefer total anonymity and will therefore appreciate the benefits of choosing a small home based practice, without a waiting room, receptionist or other staff being aware of their presence.
Counselling is carried out within the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) Ethical Framework, which requires practitioners to be regularly supervised. This ensures the quality and safety of the work they do. Your sessions may be discussed in supervision. The supervision is confidential, and your identity would not be divulged. The BACP Accredited Clinical Supervisor is an external practitioner who is also looking after you. Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Supervisors who have achieved Accredited status have a substantial level of training and experience that has been approved by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
